A Bit of Controversy

Hi,

Earlier today, I sent out an email entitled "All Traffic is Not Created Equal" concerning the new pages at YourViralList.com where I am listing the 25 Highest and 10 Lowest Converting Traffic Sources.

I have received a few emails about it, so I just want to extend the discussion and clarify how you should use this information.

First, I am just reporting the data collected by our system.  It is not massaged in any way other than removing sources like Google, Facebook, or where we could not track the source.

It is something that will change from day to day as new results come in. I will not remove any sites from either list, including my own.

In fact, a couple of mine are closer to the bottom 10 than I would like, so I will be making changes at the sites to increase conversions.  I hope other site owners who may not be happy with their numbers will do the same.

I just want to provide our members with some guidance as to how to increase their results.  I don't want anyone driving thousands of hits from a Paid To Click site wondering why "our system" isn't working.

Our pages are converting well.  On all traffic sources, it takes 441 visitors to get one signup.  That average includes Paid To Click traffic.

If we remove the traffic from the 10 Lowest Converting Traffic Sources, that average gets even better ... 255 visitors to get one signup.

That being said, I did want to add a bit of a further explanation for better understanding.

The number which you need to be most concerned about in all of your advertising is Cost Per Quality Signup.

If you are just using paid advertising, then that cost is primarily measured in dollars.  In the ad exchange world, it may be primarily a cost in time.

The highest converting sources tend to be the most costly in time or money.  The lowest converting sources are far less expensive. This factors into the Cost Per Quality Signup and you need to consider it.

It takes more work to generate 100 visitors from a mailer than a traffic exchange.   The conversion rate is much higher, but so is the cost.

You need to factor that into your process of determining what traffic sources to use.

Paid to Click sites have very low conversions but are also very cheap. That may bring the cost per signup down, but you also have to consider if PTC surfers are who you want on your list.  If that is where you advertise, then that is what you are going to get.

I stand by what I say on the pages, that I do not want anyone to send PTC or other non-converting traffic to the site.  I am not trying to brag about how many visitors we received.  I want quality signups for your list.

I want your time to be valuable and well used.  I would rather sacrifice 4% of the total signups for the site to deliver the pages twice as fast. Ultimately, that will probably increase conversions by more than 4% anyway!

Take the conversion numbers we provide and then factor into that the cost per visitor in your time or money and that will help to drive your focus in the right direction.

To see the conversion numbers from launch, then you just have to ...
